I started off on the first day of school with Phoebe and Silas substitute teaching in their school. So the three of us had our first day back together. Phoebe is in 4th grade this year. She was very happy to hear who her teacher would be and that she had some of her friends in her classroom.
First day of 4th grade...
She has had an excellent first half of her 4th grade school year. She is in both the high reading and high math groups for her grade level. She is quiet at school, but participates and does her best work each day.
Phoebe has reading, spelling, and math homework each week. She works hard at home to complete these worksheets and tasks so that she can get them turned in as soon as possible. She enjoys doing the extra credit work that is sent home too, along with the prizes and incentives she earns when she turns them back in at school.
Below is Phoebe's fall yearbook school picture.
She has enjoyed the science units that her class has done together this year, especially the lessons that she has learned more about the human body
She has learned more about our country, historical figures, and is starting to study Kansas and its history now.
She does excellent every week on her spelling tests.
Phoebe, Silas, and I all participated in "See You At The Pole" day at their school. A morning each year, before the school day begins, for anyone (child or adult) to come together at the flagpole and pray for our nation, our schools, our friends, our community, and our leaders.
She has gotten to do some fantastic art projects this year!
In early October the school held "Disco on the Drive". Each grade level had been practicing a couple dances to some disco music and got to perform them one evening for parents and friends. It was a fun evening for our school community to come together and watch our children's performances.
Phoebe has gotten better and better at math every year. She figures out the concepts and applies them easily to her problems. She has done very well on math tests and quizzes this year.
Popee and Nanee got to come and enjoy "lunch with grandparents" day with Phoebe. They brought her a special lunch from Spangles.
Popee and Nanee also came on a Friday afternoon to help Eric and I cheer for the kids at the annual fall fun run.
4th and 5th grade ran their mile race together. Below, lining up on the starting line.... Phoebe is in the middle of the picture, hair in a pony tail, wearing a pink-colored shirt.
On your marks, get set, GO!
Phoebe worked hard during this race. She had set a goal for herself to run under an 8 minute mile. I thought she could do it, but would have no room to slow down. As I watched her run, (and yelled like the crazy yeller mom I am) she kept up her pace, she stayed with people and she kept trying to pick people off.
At the end of the race, as she came up the last short hill, to the straight away and finish line, she was giving it everything she had left in her....
And, SHE DID IT! She ran a 7:25 mile!!!! She reached her goal! She placed 13th out of all the 4th and 5th graders combined and 9th out of the 4th graders. She ran her best mile race yet!
Our school district has gone to grading with S, E, and N in the elementary schools. Eric and I are not fans of this system change. I anticipate this sticking around for a short while and then getting changed back to the traditional A, B, C, D, and F system. Phoebe's grades show that she has a lot of S's. When looking at her percentages, which are not shown on the report card, they reflect that she does have all A's. Good job, Phoebe!
For Halloween Phoebe dressed up as a K-State cheerleader. Her school had their Halloween parade of costumes and then they all went back to their classrooms for their class parties.
Below, her class together before their party.
Her class got to take a field trip to the Museum of World Treasures in the fall. They completed an artifact study as a small group, looked around the museum, went on a scavenger hunt throughout the museum, and ate lunch there before heading back to the school later that afternoon.
Below, Phoebe and her friends, Mia, Raina, and Alessandra.
Phoebe received a positive office referral from her classroom teacher and principal for being such a hard worker, being prepared, showing discipline, accountability, and excellence in her classroom. Her teacher said, "Phoebe increased her AIMS math score by 52 points this winter. Her hard work, dedication, and study habits have paid off! Great job!" The principal said, "Way to go Phoebe!! Keep up the positive work ethic. You will accomplish great things."
In December, Santa and one of his elves came to visit the students and deliver a book to each one of them.
What have you liked about your 4th grade year so far?Phoebe: I like it when we have days off.... (as she gives me a ornery little grin). I like P.E. and music and recess. I liked it when my teacher gave "no homework passes" and when she let us earn donuts for breakfast with her. We have gotten to do some good art projects in my class this year. My favorite one so far was when I made "Me". We used little torn pieces of paper to make a picture of ourselves.
Who are some of your favorite friends to have in your classes, play with at recess, and eat lunch with?
Phoebe: Shawna and Lila
What are some of the things that you have enjoyed learning about this year?
Phoebe: I liked learning about me (human body).
What do you love about your school? What makes it one of the best?
Phoebe: My school has some great teachers. P.E. is fun.
