Eric and I are teaming up to do these Baseball and Softball blogs this year.
Phoebe - 10u Softball
As much as he would have liked to, Eric just couldn't coach three teams this year and keep up with the practice and game schedules of all three teams. So, we elected to put Phoebe with some of her friends on another team this year. Her coaches this year are Kaitlyn, Nicole, and Jennifer. Their team name this year is the Black Cherries. Her team plays games on the same nights as Silas's team, and sometimes at the exact same time, so there are times that I go with Phoebe and Eric goes to Coach Silas's team.
**Game #2 against Conway Springs**
In the second game Phoebe played shortstop and left center. She does a good job of being ready for the ball and knowing what to do if the ball should happen to be hit to her. She did not get any hits, but was walked and struck out. They lost this game.
**Game #3 against Mulvane 2**
This is the first year for the girls to be able to pitch to each other. Prior to this was the machine-pitch league, so some of these 10u games can get a little long with lots of walks and batters getting hit. Thank goodness for the 5 run per inning rule. This also makes it hard for our girls to get hits and to remember what to do with the ball in the field when it is actually hit. Our team's best pitcher this season is our friend, Abigail. She is working hard at home and at practices to learn and be a better pitcher.
Phoebe got on base during this game with two walks and stole her way around the bases to score.
She played shortstop and left center. They played hard against this team but came up one run short of the win, losing 12 to 11.
**Game #4 against Mulvane 1**
This was game one of a double header on this night. Phoebe struck out and got walked during this game.
Phoebe does a good job of stealing and running fast around the bases. She gets a good lead off and watches her coaches and the pitches. When she steals she runs hard without hesitation.
We won this game.
**Game #5 against Belle Plaine**
We knew ahead of time that Phoebe might get a chance to try pitching during this game. She had been practicing pitching at her team practices, and practicing at home with Eric and Sarah. Sarah made a sign to hold up to encourage her sister during this game.
She was put in to pitch in the 3rd inning. She pitched to just a few girls, throwing only a few strikes. The girls she got to pitch to either walked or hit off her. I am glad she tried pitching. She told us later that she did not like pitching very much. She thought she did horrible. She does enjoy playing shortstop though, because according to her, she gets a lot of action there. (I am glad she likes shortstop because shortstop and left center are the only positions she has gotten to play this year besides the attempt at pitching.)
This game ended in a tie. Some parents weren't happy with this, (me) as the time limit had not expired. Another inning should have been played to determine the winner.
Popee and Nanee got to watch both of these games with us.
Silas - Machine Pitch Baseball
**Game #2 against Mulvane 1**
I (Eric) am head coaching Silas's team this year. Our team name is Thunder.
Silas should be in T-ball but we moved him up to machine pitch. He is one of four kids on the team that should be in t-ball but is playing up. Silas is one of the better players and will play (along with 2 others) our most important positions this year: Pitcher and 1st Base. I will also have him play catcher and right field (we are required to rotate players each inning)
Silas had a super fan for this game, his teacher.
**Game #3 against Clearwater 1**
We played a good Clearwater team. They hit the ball well. This gave our guys some opportunities to get outs in the field. Silas had two of them at pitcher the first inning. Silas also enjoys catching and playing first.
Silas has a great looking swing. The picture above was a pop up that was foul. He struck out this at bat but then had a smash to centerfield his second at bat, which scored our only run of the game.
Our bats were cold this evening, but there was some good play in the field.
**Game #4 against Clearwater 2**
Silas had a great game this evening. His first at bat was a short pop-up on the third base side that resulted in a single. His next two at bats he crushed the ball. The first was a line drive to right center resulting in a triple. The next was a hard ground ball to left center.
We were missing two of our better players, Colton and James. We also were missing coach Mike, so Jayme helped out.
Silas played 1st, pitcher, and catcher. He didn't have any action at 1st or pitcher. The other team did not start hitting the ball until the last inning when Silas was catching. Our defense that inning was not good.
We won the game 7-2. If the other coach could have thrown more strikes for his team, the game would have been closer. Our offense was good, our defense was not.
Sarah - 12u Softball
**Game #1 against Haysville team 2**
I (Eric) am assistant coaching Sarah's 12u softball team. Our team name is Heat.
Sarah played shortstop and pitcher.
She came in to pitch the 3rd and 4th innings.
Sarah pitched incredibly well. She was throwing hard and throwing strikes.
Sarah struck out her first at bat but redeemed herself with a long flyball to left field.
She rounded the bases for a homerun. Look at the smile on her face, (above right).
Sarah's team won 13-1.
**Game #2 against Derby 2**
We played Derby in Derby. The game was 2-1 through 3 innings but got out of hand when Derby changed their picture for the 4th inning.
Sarah caught (2) line drives at shortstop getting a double play on one of them and almost a double play on the other.
Sarah has a minor glitch in her swing that we are trying to correct. She had two strikeouts and a walk.
On Sarah's walk, she was aggressive running around the bases and scored.
The second pitcher for Derby basically walked in 10 runs. We ended up winning 12-1.
The girls looked good on defense and Hannah pitched great. Our bats need to heat up though. This is a good looking team.
