Christmas Pictures - Take One and Two

I decided to try and take some Christmas card pictures of our three lovely children about a week ago.  I realized it was December and thought to myself, I better get on that... So, one evening before Eric got home from work I got the all three kids dressed and looking nice for what I hoped would be a quick, painless little short photo shoot.  (What was I thinking...?  Never is it short.  Never is it quick.  And, never is it painless.  Rather it is painful for me and very frustrating.  Every. Single. Time.  But somehow I forget this, and think, oh I am super woman, I can do it.  Wrong.)  Here is the other thing you should know... I am picky about pictures.  Not just a little picky, but the super annoying retake that ten times person picky.  (I have already edited and deleted the most terrible of these two takes.  It was kind of rewarding to me in my frustrated moment to hit that delete button.)  So, here it is, "Take One".

I found a great spot in front of the fence in our yard, laid down a piece of black fabric and showed Sarah where to sit on the black fabric... five times.  My frustration level was going up...  Finally she was seated in the exact right spot.  Next Phoebe.  Okay she was in the right spot, now to place Silas on Sarah's lap, adjust everyone's clothes, hair, and hats.... Wipe off Silas's slobbery face.  Pull his hands out of his mouth for the eighth time, ask Sarah to try to hold him up straight and hold his hands down at the same time....  And, I start clicking away.  Squeaky toy in my left hand, camera in my right hand, all the while making silly noises, dancing, singing, and reminding someone to "sit up straight", "look at the camera", "hold still", "open your eyes", "smile", and on and on and on....
Below may be the best picture from our "Take One" shots.  Everyone is somewhat looking in the right direction, and looking happy, or a little big-eyed in Silas's case.
When I got tired frustrated enough of trying to get them all sitting up straight, and holding Silas right, I had them lay down on the black fabric.  Heads perfectly placed together of course...  Now here we go again... "smile, a real smile", "look at my camera"... more noises and dancing around from me... I am sure at this point any neighbors that we have that may have witnessed this whole scene were either laughing at me or thinking how crazy I may be....

Again let me emphasize how hard and frustrating it is to try and get three small children to look in the same general direction and smile all at the same time....
By this time now we are about fifteen minutes into this and Phoebe is done with a capital D.  So I decide to try and take some individual shots, starting with Sarah.  She smiles and poses the most easily and naturally.  Yay, go Sarah!  A breath of fresh air.  Now onto individual shots of Phoebe.....
Me, "Okay Phoebe smile, your turn now.  Show me your teeth.  Say cheese.  Say Merry Christmas.  Say Popee and Nanee.  Smile!  Look like an angel.  Don't pick your nose.  Hands down.  Come on Phoebe, just give me one good smile...no fakers...your prettiest smile."  And, that was it for take number one.  Silas started to cry (no individual pictures for him), Phoebe would not smile, and the sun went down.
Take number two happened two days later.  I decided to try it this time inside at our church, which is decorated beautifully for Christmas.  Upon arriving at church I got all the lights turned on, coats off of the girls, and Silas out of his car seat.  Next positioning them in front of this lighted tree... Sarah and Phoebe in place, Phoebe NOT smiling... Check.  Add in a squirming and crying (already) Silas... Check.  And, failure for take number two was looming over me.  In my head I am thinking to myself..... "Self, stay calm.  Eric will be here to help you sing and dance soon.  Just hold on till then....."
Phoebe did not want to be in any more pictures after about the first two clicks of the camera so I said, "Okay, Phoebe take a break.  I'll take some of just Sarah and Silas."  She happily got off of the little platform.  Cue Silas to start eating his hands like a little madman....  (If you notice in the pictures below, Sarah is trying to hold onto him and hold his hands down...She finally gets him into some sort of a hug-lock, not to be confused with a head-lock.  These are two totally different techniques.  But, Silas is quick with his hands and completely snuck one out and over on Sarah.)
In the meantime, Eric had arrived and talked Phoebe into trying a couple shots by herself and a few more with Sarah and Silas.  I decided to try a few more group shots in a different place in the church...a little wagon.  (That should be fun, right?  This would get them to smile...sitting in a wagon, covered in fake snow, and with a basket of fake apples....)  Nope, Silas started to cry again.  Eric took him and I continued on with just the two girls.
These of Sarah and Phoebe turned out pretty cute!  But, I can't use them on our Christmas card.  We have THREE kids now.  Back to being frustrated.
And, finally a couple more of Phoebe by herself, seemingly happy, but not holding still....
So, after all of this I remembered how much I like going to the JCPenny's Portrait Studio to have my kid's pictures taken. They always do a good job posing the kids, acting silly to get them to smile, using props, and they have great low prices, and my frustration level stays low.  Three days later I got all three kids dressed up yet again and we headed to JCPenny's were Carmen took some wonderful portraits of my kids altogether and individually.  Thank you Carmen and JCPenny's!

Watch for these cute portraits of the three Hendrickson kids coming soon... to a mailbox or computer near you!

"Let's All Skate!"

On Tuesday Sarah brought home a note from school about a roller skating party at a local skating rink.  She called Daddy at work to see if we could go... He said "yes", so that evening we all went roller skating.  It had been years and years since either Eric or I had been and this was Sarah and Phoebe's first time!

As we drove to the skating rink I told Eric about my memory of the first time that I had gotten to go roller skating... My dad took me to the local skating rink.  I had to have been around Sarah's age, about 5 or 6.  We got out on the floor together, going slowly around in big circles.  As I remember, we were doing pretty well, holding hands, going at our own pace as others whizzed around us and flew by us.  Then it happened, the lights dimmed, and a million twinkling lights shown down on the floor all around us... Dad got dizzy and down we both went, crashing onto the floor.  I am sure this may have hurt Dad a little bit, but it is such a funny memory now.  Thanks Dad, for taking me skating when I was little!  What a fun memory that we share... One that will always make me smile and laugh out loud, just a little!
Phoebe's foot was small enough that she could get the shoe skates, meaning her shoe fit right inside the skates.  Sarah's foot however was too big for the shoe skates, so she got regular, super fast rolling, skates just like Eric and I.
Phoebe did pretty well, falling some, but maneuvering and controlling her shoe skates pretty well.  She held onto Eric or my hand most of the time out on the floor, but tried to do it herself for a couple short stints.

Skating proved to be a little tricky and rough on the elbows and whole body for Sarah.  She fell MANY times... HARD!  Her right arm and elbow took the brunt of one hard fall and she has a giant red/purple/brown bruise and swollen area to show for it.  She did not ever cry though... She just kept getting up and trying to skate again.  She is tough, and stubborn, (like me) when she wants to get or accomplish something.  She tried holding onto Eric and my hands some out on the floor, but really wanted to be able to do it herself.  We encouraged her over and over to hang onto the wall to practice.
As we headed home for the night after skating, we asked both girls if they had fun, and if they would ever want to come skating again...?  "Yes" was the chorus we heard from the backseat as we were driving home. So look out elbows, knees, hands and various other body parts that are bruised  and hurting still today... We will be back for more!

Jesus Loves Me

About a week ago at one of our church gatherings, during a praise singing time, Phoebe requested that Devin play "Jesus Loves Me".  Devin who is an amazing self-taught guitar player, had not learned to play this song yet.  So, over the next week Devin taught himself  "Jesus Loves Me".  When we all came together again last Wednesday night, Devin from up on the stage said, "The next song will be "Jesus Loves Me", for Phoebe".  She was excited!  She went up on the stage to help lead singing the song with a few of her friends, her sister, and Aunt Wyonna.  My heart was happy!  What an amazing young man to care enough and remember this little girls song request that week.  Thank you Devin.  You are a blessing to those around you!
Jesus Love Me This I Know
For The Bible Tells Me So
Little Ones To Him Belong
They Are Weak But He Is Strong.
Yes Jesus Loves Me
Yes Jesus Loves Me
Yes Jesus Loves Me

November Schoolwork

Sarah continues to enjoy her teacher, school, and new friends!
She really has started to like to try drawing new and different things.  In the pictures below she has drawn lots of fairies, a cow and its calf, ducks, a bat,and dogs.
Me: You got to go to a birthday party for one of the girls in your class in November... What did you like about it?
Sarah: "The candy.  The games I played with all the kids.  They were all older than me."
Sarah has been getting very excited about being able to read.  She sees words and asks us throughout the day... "What does _ _ _ _ _ spell?"  She is eager to learn and review the words that she does know already.  Her teacher sent home a list of 18 sight words before Thanksgiving for her to learn and be tested on when school resumed after the holiday.  If any student got all of the words right they would earn a prize.  We made some flashcards to practice the words at home, and she learned them very quickly.  Sarah missed four words on the verbal test, but got to retest a couple days later.  She informed me that no one in her class had gotten all the words right.  We continued to practice the words at home and I figured out why she had missed the four words.... She had sounded those words out.  (No sounding out the words, because they are "sight" words.)  So, I taught her a "trick", sounding the words out in her head, if she needed to.  She thought this was great!  The day of retesting came and she was the first and only one in her class to get all of the words right, earned a prize, and her whole class clapped for her!  She was so happy... smiling from ear to ear!
Me: You get to have Centers in your classroom a couple times a week... Which one do you like the best?
Sarah: "My bestest one is the book center.  It has a lot of books to read.  And, the listening center.  It has headphones and you listen to stories."

Thanksgiving in Texas 2012

We headed South to Fort Worth, Texas to visit some of Eric's family for Thanksgiving last week.  On our first day there we went to a science and history museum.  Phoebe liked putting together a train track and the play grocery shopping center.
Eric, his brother Bret, our nephew Ayden, Sarah and Phoebe all enjoyed building with Legos.
Here they are outside the museum with the Grinch statue and a turtle statue.
We had a picnic and played at a big park South of Fort Worth.
Eric's mom brought a washers game for everyone to play...
The brothers, Eric, Bret and Marc, played their annual "brother football game".  It usually gets rough, involves trash talking each other, and laughing a lot.  Fun times.  We all enjoy watching them run, fall down, and tackle each other trying to get the football.  This year there was lots of "Go Daddy" cheering from Sarah and Phoebe.
After the games we posed for some family pictures....
Here is the Hendrickson Family: left to right - Stacee, Sharon, Marc, Eric, Silas, Sarah, Phoebe, Bret, Ayden and Andrea
We stayed with Eric's mom.  She has a new house and it was great to get to see it and spend time there with her.  The kids all played  very well together!  They especially enjoyed wrestling with the Daddies, playing hide and seek with them, and taking some horse rides on them.

Ayden wanted to hold his new little cousin Silas.  He did great and is going to be a great big brother to his new sister next February.  (We all will be excited to meet the newest addition to the Hendrickson family in 2013!)
On Thanksgiving day, Grandma Sharon let the kids help her make "Hershey's Kiss Cookies".
She also let them inspect the Turkey's heart, neck, and other yucky inside parts before they got cooked.
And, they helped prepare the Turkey for cooking....
We all had a great time in Texas!  Thanks for everything Grandma Sharon.
