Phoebe's class took a field trip a few weeks ago to Klausmeyer Family Farm. Silas and I met them there and spent the day walking around with her class enjoying animals, fall weather, a pumpkin patch, playing with children, and helping out on the farm.
Klausmeyer Family Farm use to be a working dairy farm, milking around 100 cows two times a day. Today they are part of Agritourism, Agritourism is defined as any agriculturally based operation or activity that brings visitors to a farm or ranch. Agritourism includes a very wide variety of activities such as, buying produce from a farm stand, navigating a corn maze, picking fruit, feeding animals, or even staying at a bed and breakfast on a farm.
There were many baby animals to see, touch, and learn about.
There was a little goat wandering all around the farm. It happened to like standing on top of this plastic crate while we were near to it.
All of the children and adults sat in bleachers while we watched pig races. When the little piglets were released from their chutes they raced around an oval shaped dirt track to a waiting bowl of milk big enough for all of them to stick their little snouts into....oink oink oink.
Next was a milking demonstration.
Then the Kindergarten teachers each got to bottle feed a baby lamb. They lambs came running and knew exactly what to do!
We took a hayrack ride out to their pumpkin patch where we each got to pick from a wide variety of pumpkins of many sizes and colors.
Phoebe found a big orange one, and Silas got a cute little oval shaped orange one. I found a small gray one.
There was a fun playground to play for awhile. Silas liked the old tractor and pretended to drive it all over the farm.
Phoebe took time out from playing to pose for these JOHN DEERE pictures of herself working all over the farm. She's a busy girl.
Each child packed a sack lunch. They got to decorate their sacks a few days in advance of the fieldtrip. Phoebe drew herself at the farm in the pumpkin patch on one side of her sack and on the other side riding on the hayrack ride.
Phoebe's class got to help feed the cows. Each child got a small bucket and went from the feed bin, scooping feed, back to the trough many times. The cows were hungry!
Below is Phoebe's Kindergarten class + Silas. What a fun group of children. It was a fun day on the farm.
