Sarah and I ran in the Gobble Wobble 5k Run last Saturday. Sarah had been very sick for about three days prior to the race, and had just started to feel somewhat better the day before. I was really unsure if she would even run Saturday morning or not, but she got up, looked at what I was wearing, went back in her room and got dressed in an outfit that looked like what I was wearing (we've been dressing alike at our races lately.) and she was ready to go. She was determined to run the race. She is a fierce competitor and she did not want to let me down. I reminded her on the starting line that she could walk some if she started to feel bad, and if she needed to throw-up to just do it and then keep going.
This 5k had the least amount of people in it of all the 5k's that she and I have run in so far. There was actually a 5k and an 8k race. Both races started together at the same time, some ran 3.1 miles and some ran 5 miles. Sarah fell back behind me right away, but kept running. After the race was over she told me she walked about 10 steps twice during the 5k. This is the first time that she has ever had to walk part of a 5k race.
I ran a good race. After the first 7 minutes or so, the racers were spread out enough that no one was really around me. I kept watching for race markers and directors to be sure I was turning at the right places and going the right way. A couple of times I wasn't sure if I had made a correct turn, (no markers or I missed the mark) but kept running. Eric, Phoebe, and Silas were waiting to cheer me on close to the finish line. I love seeing their faces and hearing their cheers as I approach them and run past them
After I finished, I walked back along the race path until I saw Sarah heading into the final stretch. I yelled and cheered for her. Then I joined her in her last stretch to the finish, encouraging her the whole way.
Our fans were waiting to high five us and yell for Sarah to finish strong as we raced past them into the finish.
