August and September - Phoebe

The evening before school started in August Eric took us all out for ice cream cones at Braum's.  Everyone enjoys this beginning of the school year tradition!
After having the same teacher and classmates for the last two years, Phoebe and I were both a little nervous for her first day of school.  She got to meet her teacher and find out who her classmates were at the school's "Back to School Night" the evening before school started, when we visited the school, dropped off school supplies, and worked at the school's PTO table.
This is Silas's first year at school, and Phoebe's first year to step up to be the big sister and show him the ropes.
The first morning, in the classroom with her new teacher.
Phoebe seems to enjoy math.  It seems to be pretty easy to her.  I have some teaching materials left form when I use to be in the classrooms more and left over from my mom's 3rd grade classroom.  I like to pull some of them out for my kids to work on and learn from every now and then.  I pulled out some multiplication lacing sticks for Phoebe a few weeks ago.  She loves them.  It is like a game.  We have even caught her a few times working on the lacing sticks when she is in bed, before going to sleep, instead of reading.
She is doing really well on her spelling tests again this year.  She studies the words during the week at school during reading and at home with us when she is doing her homework.
Her grade level tests students at the beginning of the year and levelized them for math and reading.  Phoebe did well on the tests and was put into the high math and high reading groups.  So, at math and reading time during the day she gets to switch classrooms.  During her reading group she has several reading tasks that she has to complete each week for a grade.
My good friend, Jenny, went to school to eat lunch with her daughter Haylee, who happens to be one of Phoebe's best friends.  She ended up eating lunch with a table full of little friends!  On the left, Gavin, Haylee, and Phoebe.  On the right, Silas and Lila.
Our friends took care of our cats while we were out of town for a weekend in September.  When we returned Phoebe received this sweet note and friendship bracelet.
She was excited to show me this slice of pizza/history that she made.  Under each slice of pepperoni is some American history.
She continues to take her lunch to school everyday instead of eating a school/hot lunch.  She is a slow eater.  Being a slow eater myself, I understand when she tells me she might not have enough time to eat her whole lunch if she was to select hot lunch from school...after waiting in line, getting her lunch, and sitting down to eat it would cut down on her total lunch time.  And, another plus to packing and taking her own lunch from home is getting to pick out and take only things that she likes to eat.
There is a new music teacher and Phoebe has been really enjoying music class this year, the songs that they sing, and the games that they get to play.
Below, Phoebe with one of her besties, Haylee.
3rd grade is off to a good start for Phoebe and her friends.  We are glad she has some really good friends in her class and at her school, and we are thankful that she likes school and learning.
