Girls On The Run - Spring 2021

Phoebe participated in the Spring Girls On The Run program at her school.  They started practicing together in February after school two days a week.  Leading up to a 5K run at the end of the season for all participants and their running buddies.  Phoebe has gotten faster and stronger and I anticipated that she may be able to out run me this year.  (I had not been running since I badly hurt my left ankle last summer.)  Sarah volunteered to run the practice 5K with us two weeks prior to the ending 5K race.  Below, me, Phoebe, Sarah, Shawna, and David before we set out on our practice 5K run.
We stood in a big circle before the run and stretched out a little bit.
Below, all of the girls with their running buddies before the practice 5K.
We had some great cheerers during the practice run...Mandy, Felicity, Silas, Abigail, and Traci.
We started out quick and strong, still smiling.  After about a half mile I started to fall behind Phoebe and Sarah.
At the halfway point both my girls were way ahead of me.  Good job, girls!
Phoebe accepted a water bottle at the halfway point.  As soon as she took it she regretted it.  I have told her it is hard to run a good race carrying items.  And, unless you are dying, you should be able to run a race without getting a drink during the race.  Wait till the end for drinks.  She forgot, but was able to hand the bottle off to our cheerers as she ran past them.
Shawna and David came in first with a time of 25:??.  Great run Shawna!  Phoebe came in second with a time of 27:22.  Sarah fell behind Phoebe at some point and ran a 28:??.  David went back for Phoebe and pushed her into the end.  Great running girls!

I on the other hand did not run great.  Boo hoo.  I ran a 31:00.  I did not walk.  I did not die.  Some say this is good, I agree for not running in a very long time, that it is not bad, but coming from a running background, I know what I use to be able to do and this was not "good".  But, I did it.  I am excited to watch my kids run and continue to get better and better though.

Sunday, May 2nd, the morning of the 5K GOTR race!  (After the practice 5K a couple of the coaches and I talked.  I wanted Phoebe to have a buddy who could keep up with her and push her.  I knew that it wasn't me this time.  We were able to recruit a Coach's son who is a fantastic runner and who Phoebe already knew, to be her buddy the day of the race.)
Before the race the team met and got ready to run.

Below, our team and their Coaches.

Our team with their running buddies.  Phoebe's race day running buddy was Dax.  Thank you, Dax, for being willing to jump in and run with Phoebe!
Ready, Set, Go!  Phoebe got out to a pretty good start and then began to pick people off.

About halfway through the race Phoebe got a side cramp and had to slow down a bit, but as she rounded the corner and came up and over the bridge towards the finish line she started to pick up her pace.  She finished strong with a time of 27:14, her PR!  And, she finished with an overall place of 4th in the race!  Way to go, Phoebe!  (Some of her other teammates placed 2nd and 3rd!  It was a great race and showing on our team's part!)

Phoebe also wants to give a BIG SHOUT-OUT of "THANKS" to those who helped her raise over $500, and reach her GOTR fundraising goal.  All money raised helps provide scholorships to other girls who want to participate in the GOTR program next year.  THANK YOU for your generosity!
