Field Days

Phoebe's school field day was during the morning of Wednesday, May 3rd.  It was a cool wet morning so the PE teacher held the event inside.  It worked out really well.  Parents and spectators got to sit in the bleachers and could see all the events and cheer on all the students.

Phoebe's first event was the bean bag toss.  She had 3 bean bags that she got to toss, trying to land them inside of the hula hoops that were laid on the gym floor out in front of her.  She got 2nd place in this event.
Her next event was the 35 meter dash.
The next event she signed up for was the Limbo.  She got a 2nd place ribbon for this event.
Her fourth event was the Egg Race.  She had to carry a wooden egg on a wooden spoon without dropping it as she raced to the finish line.  If the egg was dropped, that student had to go back and start over.  She did not drop her egg and got 4th place.
The most exciting event of the morning was Phoebe's fifth and final event, the Hula Hoop contest.  Phoebe is an excellent Hula Hooper.  Last year she did very well in this event too.  Each student started out with one hoop.  If the hoop fell they were out.  Phoebe had no problems keeping her hoop up and spinning.
Round two, another Hula Hoop was added to each remaining student.
Phoebe was concentrating.  No smiling.  Her eyes kept darting around looking at her competitors.  She Hula Hooped for a long time.  Then her hoops started to wobble and fell to the gym floor.  She got 2nd place in this event.
Sarah's school field day was during the afternoon on Thursday, May 4th.  It was sunny out so it was held on the football field.  Her first event was the Egg Race.
She did not drop her egg and got 2nd place.
Her next event was the 100 meter dash.  She got 2nd place in this event too.
Silas raced up and down the sidelines as he watched and tried to keep up with Sarah and her friends.  He can't wait to be a big kid and compete in sporting events too.
Sarah's third event was the tennis ball throw.  She got to throw 3 balls and had to try to hit an orange cone.  She did not hit the cone.
Popee and Nanee made it to watch Phoebe and Sarah for both of their field days.  We love having their support and cheers from the sidelines.  And, we know that they both love watching their grandchildrens' events.  Thanks Popee and Nanee for always trying to make it to as many of your grandchildrens' events as you can.  I know they like having you here and we all appreciate you.
Sarah is a master at Hula Hooping.  This was her fourth event.  Just like Phoebe, it proved to be one of the most exciting.  She started with one hoop and kept it going and going and going...then they each added another hoop.  She kept two hoops going and going and going....
Then the remaining contestants added a third hoop.  She kept it going for a bit, then the yellow hoop started to separate from the other two... then they started to drop.... she got 2nd place in the Hula Hoop contest.
Her last event of the day was the 400 meter relay.  Each person teamed one another to form a 2-person team.  There were 4 girl teams that competed against each other.  Each person had to run the length, up and back of the football field twice, one then the other, one then the other.  Sarah's partner was her good friend Lauren.  Lauren started their team off and Sarah anchored.
They were a bit behind two of the teams when Sarah's hand was tagged the first time.  Below, you can see Sarah playing the catch-up game.  She was able to stride out and catch both of those girls in front of her by the time she tagged Lauren's hand for Lauren's second down and back.  As you can well imagine this was the most exciting event for this running Mom.  Yes, I WAS yelling as loudly as my voice could go for Sarah and Lauren.
Sarah played catch-up again on her second down and back.  She passed two of the teams and had the last one in her sights.  Below, Sarah was gaining on her, as the girl was looking back to see where Sarah was.  Sarah didn't quite catch her.  It was an amazing race. I know she would have caught and beat her if she'd have had about 10 more yards in the race.  I admire Sarah's drive and will to win so much.  She is so athletic and is a fierce competitor in every sport she enters.
Sarah and Lauren received 2nd place in the 400 meter relay.
The last event of the day was the Tug Of War.  Every student was looking forward to this event.  Class vs. Class, although one class had more than the other on this particular day so Sarah's class had to share one of their classmates, Lukas, with the other class.
Pull!  Pull!  Pull Harder!
Sarah's team lost in this pulling competition.  Sarah is convinced that if her class could have kept Lukas, they would have easily won.
